『Korean Painting: From Modern to Contemporary, 1945-1980s』은 광복 이후 1980년대까지 한국 근현대 회화의 흐름을 보여주는 영문 도서이다. 한국 현대예술 시리즈 중 앞서 출간된 미술 도서는 디아스포라, 여성 미술가, 추상이라는 특정 주제를 다룬 데 비해, 이 도서는 한국 근현대 회화를 전반적으로 소개한다. 광복 이후 진행된 구상과 비구상의 양대 계보, 70년대 실험 미술, 80년대 민중 미술 등을 전반적으로 서술하며 각 시기 별로 화단에 대두되었던 주요 이슈들과 해외 동향의 유입 및 한국 미술가들의 해외 진출 등을 일목요연하게 확인할 수 있다.



20세기 초부터 우리나라는 일제식민지, 광복, 미군정과 소군정의 분할통치, 한국전쟁, 분단 등 정치사회적으로 혼란과 변화를 맞는다. 본 도서는 일제 강점기 때부터 논의를 시작하는데 당시 상황이 우리 현대 미술사에 미친 영향이 크기 때문이다. 2장은 1945년 광복 이후 정치적 이념에 따라 뭉치고 흩어진 미술 단체들, "신사실파"의 전위적 성향, 그리고 1950년대 한국전쟁기 미술가들의 활동을 소개한다. 3장은 현대 미술교육기관의 발전을 보여주고 대한민국미술전람회의 창설과 굳어진 관행에 대해 비판한다. 4장은 1960년대 본격화된 한국 미술가들의 해외 진출과 당시 유행했던 앵포르멜 미술, 그리고 특정 유파나 사조에 속하지 않았던 작가를 소개한다. 5장에서는 1970년대 등장한 개념미술과 행위미술, 그리고 단색화를 살펴본다. 6장에서는 1980년대 태동한 민중미술과 현대 미술의 추상적 사조에 반발해 도약한 구상미술에 대해 다룬다. 마지막 장에서는 모더니즘 개념에 대한 질문과 시대 구분 및 역사 인식을 제고할 필요성을 제시한다.



이 도서는 한국의 시대적 흐름과 함께 한국 근현대 미술의 중심에 있던 작가를 큰 그림을 그리며 파악할 수 있으며, 그들의 주옥 같은 회화 작품을 다량 소개한다. 국내 화가의 우수성을 세계에 알리는 좋은 기회가 될 것이고 현대 한국미술사에 대해 균형 잡힌 개요가 필요한 독자에게 적합한 책이 될 것이다.

Korean Painting: From Modern to Contemporary, 1945-1980s is intended for the use of those who are curious about the modern history of Korean art, especially in the field of the painting. Compared to earlier art book series which focused on specific topic like diaspora-artist, women artists, abstract painting, the newly released book shows the history of modern and contemporary Korean painting through its selected introductions of artists and their paintings from 1945 to 1980s. The book also contains developing stages, historical contexts, important artists, and movements of Korean art history.



Since beginning of the 20th century, Korean society was a state of confusion and disorganized change: Japanese occupation of Korea, the U.S. and Soviet Union' military rule, the Korean War, and division of territory. This book contains the individual and group movements and experiments of the period in Korean art world which is closely connected with these political situations. In the first and second chapters, it is presented one by one: problem of cultural identity under the Japanese colonial era, art groups of the liberation period, neo-realists group, and art activities during the Korean War. In the third and fourth chapters, it is introduced that the development of art college and National Art Exhibition, and pluralistic movements after the Korean War. The fifth and sixth chapters contain 1970s' conceptual art and monochrome painting, and 1980s' Minjung art and realism art. The last chapter deals with the terms of modernism.



The book will encourage readers to take an interest to the ceaseless struggles of Korean painters and to understand the many causes of the actions behind various conflicts between generations, schools, and tendencies. This book will continue to help the world public's understanding and interest in modern art by introducing not only the modern art of Korea but that of foreign countries.
