한국의 역사와 문화, 생활습관, 정치와 경제 등 전 분야에 걸쳐 한국을 소개하는 영문 도서이다. 저자 김중순은 2007년 영문으로 저술한 [Kimchi and IT]라는 한국소개서가 아랍어와 베트남어 등 다른 언어로도 번역 출간될 만큼 균형적이고 중립적인 시각을 지닌 인류학자이다. 그가 이번에 저술한 [Way Back into Korea]는 전작에서 다루었던 주제에다 한국의 시세를 포함한 한국인의 기질, 문화적인 특성 등을 설명하는 내용들을 보강하고 이에 대해 고찰하는 내용까지 담고 있어 한국 사회의 다양한 면모를 두루 살펴볼 수 있다. 책은 '한국이 어떠한 나라인가'라는 질문에 명확한 대답을 제시하지는 않는다. 다만 여태까지의 한국을 형성하는 데 큰 역할을 한 요소들과 그들의 존재 이유에 대해 저자 역시 의문을 갖고 차근차근 고찰한다. 이를 통해 독자들 또한 한국의 내력과 특성에 대해 고민하며 저마다 '한국'이라는 나라에 대해 '한쪽에 치우치지 않은' 대답을 스스로 찾아내게 될 것이다.

인류학자이자 고려사이버대학교 총장인 저자 김중순은 다양한 면모를 가진 한국의 역사와 문화, 생활습관, 정치와 경제 등 전 분야에 걸쳐 포괄적으로 소개하는 영문서인 [Kimchi and IT]를 이미 7년 전에 낸 바가 있다. 하지만 많은 사회의 시류가 그러하듯이, 7년이라는 시간 동안 한국 사회에도 많은 변화가 있었다. 두 번의 대선이 있었고 각종 스포츠 대회의 개최지로도 선정되었으며 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼 수많은 사건사고가 일어났었다. 비록 거품이 끼어 있다는 비판을 피해가지는 못할지언정, 머지않아 식을 것으로만 생각되었던 한류 열풍은 점점 그 기세에 불을 붙여 가속도를 더해가고 있다. 또한 다문화주의와 그에 대한 포용정책을 둘러싼 논의는 수그러들기는커녕 더욱더 화두가 되어 큰 관심을 불러일으키고 있으며, 지속가능한 경제발전을 위해 뒷받침되어야 할 환경보호에도 적극적인 자세를 취하고 있는 것이 지금 한국사회의 모습이다.

?Way Back into Korea?는 전작인 ?Kimchi and IT?에 현재 한국의 시세를 포함한 한국인의 기질, 문화적인 특성 등을 설명하는 내용들을 보강하고 이에 대해 고찰하는 내용을 담은 한국소개서이다. 한국과 미국 두 나라에서 오랜 기간 동안 살면서 얻은, 비교적 냉철하고 중립적인 시각을 지닌 저자를 통해 독자들은 한국 사회의 이런저런 면모를 두루두루 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다.

김중순 저자 김중순은 연세대학교와 동 대학원에서 법학을 공부하고 1965년 미국으로 유학을 떠났다. 에모리대학교에서 사회학 석사, 조지아대학교에서 인류학 박사 학위를 받은 후 테네시대학교의 석좌교수 겸 인류학 교수를 지냈다. 36년 만에 귀국한 후 2001년부터 현재까지 고려사이버대학교 총장과 학교법인 고려중앙학원 이사직을 겸하고 있다. 테네시대학교 교수로 재임하던 기간에는, 풀브라이트 선임학자(Senior Fulbright Scholar, 1988~1989, 1993~1994)로 두 번 선임된 바 있고, 록펠러 재단의 상주학자(Rockefeller Foundation's Scholar-in-Residence at the Bellagio Study Center, Italy)로 선임되기도 했다. 한국 내에서는 1998년에 인촌상을 수상했다. 미국 내 소수민족에 관심을 가지고 아메리칸 인디언을 비롯하여 여러 소수민족을 연구했으며, 기업인류학자로서 한국과 미국 및 일본의 기업에 대해서도 인류학적인 연구를 수행했다. 그의 연구결과는 미국과 유럽 등에 널리 소개되었으며, 근래에는 그의 연구서 일부가 이집트에서 아랍어로, 그리고 베트남에서 베트남어로 번역 출판되기도 했다.
