Forests and Korean Culture

이 책은 전영우 국민대 산림자원학과 교수가 한국의 숲을 인문학적 시각으로 재해석한 작업의 결과물이다. 1999년에 국문판이 발간된 이래, 한국간행물 윤리위원회, 문화관광부, 한국출판인회의 등 각종기관의 우수도서로 선정되었으며, 일본어판이 2004년에 일본 동경(출판사: 국서간행화)에서 출판되기도 하였다.



"Forests and Korean Culture"는 총 4부로 구성되어 있는데 제 1부는 민족정서의 본바탕을 이루고 있는 증거로서, 신화와 그림과 문학에 나타난 나무와 숲을 소개하고 있다. 제2부는 한국의 문화유산인 백자, 직지, 팔만대장경판, 조선왕조실록 등이 숲의 도움 없이는 불가능했음을 밝히고, 토종 소나무에 대한 민족 정서의 실체를 경복궁 복원 등의 예를 들어서 설명한다. 제3부에서는 문화자원으로서 숲이 지닌 가치를 조선시대 산림사회의 흔적과 지속가능성이라는 개념을 통해서 살펴본다. 제4부에서는 한국의 숲의 본래 모습이었던 활엽수림의 변천 과정을 통하여 가꾸어야 할 지속가능한 자원인 숲의 중요성과 세계적으로 주목받았던 한국의 성공적인 국토녹화의 사례를 소개하고 있다.



“Forest and the Korean culture” is the valuable product of what the author, Young Woo Chun, has looked at the forests of Korea through the window of culture since 1990's. The Korean edition published in 1999 by Sumoon publisher has been a remarkable success and was selected as a recommendable good book by Korea Publication Ethics Commission, Korean Publishers Cooperative and Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Korea. This book made an exceptional case by being published in Japanese in 2004 by Kokushu publication of Tokyo, Japan.

Today, in the Environmental Age, more people look at forests more closely and find an indispensable life-supporting ecosystem that allows humanity to resolve the environmental problems. And the traditional wisdom and values which lasted for millennia for forest use and conservation comes salient and prominent again. The reason why this English version is published is obvious and fair. The author would like to introduce to the greater global audience the Korean culture and history of forest use and conservation.
