This book is one of the products of the Korean Maritime Silk Road Expedition of 2014 which was a joint-project and was co-sponsored by Korea Maritime and Ocean University and Gyeongsangbuk-do, in South Korea. The expedition was conducted for 87 days from September 25th to December 10th in 2014. The exploration party, made up of 150 members, completed voyages linking sixteen seaport cities in fourteen countries for a total distance of 27,000 kilometers on the Hanbada, a 6,586-ton marine training ship from Korea Maritime and Ocean University.
During this period, the Institute of International Maritime Affairs from Korea Maritime and Ocean University held two international symposiums. One was the Guangzhou symposium from September 20th-22nd, in which 11 theses were presented, and the other was the Mumbai symposium from October 16th-17th, in which 13 theses were issued. The common theme of the two symposiums was the Maritime Silk Road and Seaport Cities, which is the title of this book.
The international symposiums in which experts from South Korea, China, India, and Japan participated got particular attention as the Maritime Silk Road is a current hot issue and came with enthusiastic discussions. This book consists of 19 theses presented at the symposium and the academic essays reflect the results of many discussions. It is broadly divisible into three main parts: discourses on the Maritime Silk Road, the historic Maritime Silk Road, and the Maritime Silk Road in the age of globalization.
