This book is intended to be used in English classes for students who have a special interest in maritime topics. It introduces students to a variety of maritime subjects and to Maritime English as a special case of English for Specific Purposes.
Level
The book is intended mainly for elementary students who are new to the study of maritime science, business, literature, and so on. It concentrates on common topics that the student may encounter later on in the workplace.
How the book is organized
The book consists of 12 units. Each unit focuses on a particular maritime-related theme. For the list of units, see the Contents on the following pages.
Each unit has two reading passages, with Vocabulary on the same page. Right after each reading passage are Vocabulary Check and Reading Comprehension questquestion. At the back of the book are the Answers to the questions.
How to use the book
The units are essentially free-standanding and are not ordered by content or difficulty. This means that students may work through the book in any order.
Acknowledgements
I would like to acknowledge my colleagues, Se-Eun Jhang, Gun-Su Lee, Jong-Jin Noh, Ok-Sook Hong, Kevin Parent, and Mark L. Wing, and especially Wendell R. Pepperdine for their contributions to the early version of this book.
