Guangxi is a multi-ethnic autonomous region with 11 ethnic groups, such as Zhuang, Yao and Miao, among which Zhuang is the most populous ethnic group in Guangxi and China. These ethnic groups living in Guangxi have accumulated precious cultural wealth in the course of historical development. These wealth includes folk literature recording the creation myth of Buluotuo, the ancestor of Zhuang, festivals full of ethnic characteristics such as "March the 3rdfestival of Zhuang", "Panwang festival of Yao","Hafestival of Jing"as well as"Maguai Festival of Zhuang", as well as traditional craftsmanship with ethnic wisdom including"Craftsmanship of Zhuang Brocade"and"Architectural craftsmanship for timber-framed structures of Dong".
People of all ethnic groups in Guangxi prefer to express themselves and communicate with each other in the form of songs in their daily life and work. Typical examples include the melodious grand song of Dong, ethereal butterfly song of Yao and the unique three-part folk songs of Zhuang. There are also a number of traditional operas with local charm, such as Gui opera, Guangxi Wenchang, Guilin Yugu Tunes, etc.. All the examples above are the national intangible cultural heritage of Guangxi, which are considered as the cultural name cards of Guangxi.
In this book, 37 representative Guangxi national intangible cultural heritage items are selected and introduced to readers in three languages, including Chinese, English and Korean. At the same time, each item is illustrated with vivid pictures. We hope this book could provide a guide for your exploring journey to Guangxi and a window for you to find the charm of Guangxi ethnic culture.
