Pastoral Renewal of the Catholic Church:
Proposals Inspired by Pastor Yong-Gi Cho
One might wonder why a Catholic theologian would research the theology and pastoral ministry of Pastor Yong-Gi Cho. Some years ago I read a small book about the Pentecostal movement written by Massimo Introvigne, while I was preparing a thesis on the Pentecostal movement. It gave me a big surprise. So many Catholics who were baptized but do not practice the faith, are transferring continuously to the Pentecostal churches or to other religions in Latin America and in Africa. I wanted to know the reason for this movement.
With this situation in mind, I came to have a big desire to know how the pentecostal churches do pastoral ministry. I also felt it was important to study the pentecostal movement considering its rapid growth and influence.
Since the Pentecostal movement is an experience-centered faith movement, not a theological movement, their theology is not well developed systematically. Therefore, for the purpose of this study, I thought I would summarise his theology and ministry, focusing on Yong-Gi Cho (1936-2021), who has had a significant international impact in the Pentecostal world. Even though Yong-Gi Cho was not a theologian, his typical theology and pastoral method are well known.
The purpose of this book is to help both Catholics and Protestants alike to lead God's entrusted sheep to Him for His glory.
