디자인은 한 순간에 이루어지는 것이 아니다. 모든 디자인은 필요에 의해 만들어지고 문화와 함께 발전해왔다. 같은 요소라 하더라도 그 형태와 크기가 각각 다른 이유가 바로 그것이다.
건축 안에 속한 디자인 요소들 또한 마찬가지이다. 문화적 선호, 기술의 진보, 넓어진 세계 시장, 나라별 기후, 정치적 요소, 법적 규제 등이 건축가와 건축에 영향을 미친다.
이번에 담디에서 기획한 『Architectural Element Series』는 전세계의 건축가들이 건축 요소를 설계할 때 가장 중점에 두는 것은 무엇인지, 각 나라별로 사용되는 고유의 디자인코드가 있는지, 오랜 시간 사용되고 있는 디자인 패턴은 어떤 것이 있는지 등을 한눈에 파악할 수 있도록 기획했다.
책은 전세계의 다양한 현대 사례와 고전 사례를 다양하게 다루었다. 이와 더불어 15팀의 인터뷰도 함께 수록되어 좀 더 깊이 있게 건축 요소에 대해 알아볼 수 있게 구성하였다.
이 책을 통해 단순히 눈에 좋은 건축물(eye-candy)보다 실제 그 건물에서 자주 사용하는 건축요소들에 대해 깊게 생각해보고 사용자들에게 좀 더 편하면서 좋은 디자인이 무엇인지 생각해보는 계기가 되었으면 한다.
