1886년 한국 최초의 여성 교육기관으로 설립된 이래, 이화여자대학교는 국내를 넘어 세계 속의 명문 대학으로 발전을 거듭해오고 있다. 이 책은 지난 이화의 역사와 그 밑바탕이 된 이화정신의 가치와 의미를 되새기고, 앞으로 이화가 나아갈 방향과 비전을 많은 이들과 공유하고자 기획·출간된 『이화 역사 이야기』의 영문판이다. 그동안 이화의 역사를 체계적으로 다룬 책들은 여럿 있었지만 그 내용이 방대해 접근이 여의치 않다는 아쉬움의 목소리가 컸다. 이에 127년에 이르는 이화의 역사를 손에 잡히는 한 권으로 압축시킨 The Story of Ewha: From History to Future는 누구나 쉽게 읽을 수 있도록 분량과 강약을 조절하면서도 그 자체로 한국 여성사라고 해도 좋을 이화의 발자취를 고스란히 담았다.

이 책에서는 이화학당 현판을 내걸던 1886년부터 '글로벌 여성 교육의 허브'로서 세계적인 대학으로 성장하고 있는 오늘날에 이르기까지 이화가 걸어온 127년을 크게 7개의 장으로 나누어 설명하고 있다. 각 장에는 귀한 사진 자료들을 곁들여 당대의 현장감을 살렸으며, 섬김과 나눔의 이화정신을 바탕으로 '한국 여성의 인간화'를 이루어낸 이화의 활약상을 꼼꼼하게 기록해 역사서로서의 기능에 충실하고자 했다. 또한 이화의 어제와 오늘을 기억하고 나아가 내일을 기대하는 이화인들은 물론, 한국 여성의 높아진 위상을 이야기할 때마다 이화를 떠올리는 대중들까지 모두가 흥미롭게 접근할 수 있도록 내용 편집과 디자인에 공을 들였다. 한국 근현대사 속 굵직한 사건들과 이화의 변화상을 놓치지 않으면서, 거기에 이화 특유의 아기자기한 일화들을 더해 친근감을 높였으며 세련된 디자인으로 이화라는 이름에 걸맞은 품격을 더했다.

이화역사관 엮은이 이화역사관(Ewha Archives) was established in October 1989 for the purpose of studying and archiving the history of Ewha Womans University. The institution is responsible for collecting and preserving important materials related to Ewha from both inside and outside the school. Ewha Archives' publications include 100 Years of Ewha's History, Ewha Old and New: 110 Years of History 1886?1996, and the series "In Search of Ewha's Historical Roots."
