국내 최고의 음향공학 전문가이면서 <소리박사>로 널리 알려져 있는 우리 학교 소리공학 연구소의 소장 배명진교수와 같은 연구소 참여교수이며 영어영문학과에서 영어음성학, 영어의 소리체계를 전공하고 있는 김명숙 교수가 공동 저술한 책이다. 소리에 관련된 여러 가지 주제 하에 전문적이고도 과학적인 내용을 학생들뿐만 아니라 일반 독자들도 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 설명하고 동시에 우리 생활 주변에서 발견할 수 있는 여러 가지 소리들, 즉 웃음소리와 울음소리, 말소리, 노래 소리, 음원을 위한 함성소리, 악기소리, 인간의 언어를 하는 동물들의 소리, 곤충소리, 비명소리, 백색소음 등에 대한 재미있는 이야기들이 사진 자료들과 함께 소개된다. 본 저서는 영문으로 저술되었는데 그 이유는 국제화 시대에 맞게, 소리공학과 음성음향과학에 관한 우리 숭실대학교 교수진의 높은 수준을 국내뿐 아니라 국외에도 널리 알릴 수 있는 기회를 가지기 위함이다. 더불어 영어강의에서 교재로도 사용할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.
