영문장 Style Guidebook(Dr.Lee의)

It may be fair to say that traditionally the concept of stylistic change as part of writing practice has received relatively scant attention in English education in Korea despite a major role it plays in improving the English writing skill. At the same time, however, it could also be argued, with reason, that the concept has not been considered for incorporation into English programs due in large part to a chronic shortage of educational resources, including that of professional expertise in English writing and in no small part to a limited opportunity for engagement in writing activities. Under these circumstances, the thought just occurred to me that it was about time to develop effective strategies for equipping the learners of English with the ability to expand the use of various communication devices in their writing.
In crude terms, writing, unlike other passive language skills such as reading and listening, requires a practical skill in putting to good use knowledge of English words and grammatical structures. Additionally, writing as a means of communication can be done on the same subject matter in more ways than one with the underlying meaning unaffected, as seen in the journalistic writing. For instance, we normally find that different expressions are commonly used by the press in their coverage of the same event-that is, the news of the same event is reported in the form of various expressions without any change in the contents of the message.
A difference in writing styles, or stylistic change, is also easily noticeable in the following warning signs: The warning notice reading "Please do not use cell phones in this room," often posted on the wall of a public place in America, is worded elsewhere in various ways, including "Please refrain from using cell phones in this office," "Please turn off your cell phone in this area," "Cell phones are prohibited in this room," Keep your cell phone off," "Please silence your cell phones" etc. All these warning signs carry basically the same message, although they vary from place to place in the way they are phrased.
Therefore, mindful of the desirability of utilizing diverse English expressions in writing, I have used paraphrasing technique as a tool for stylistic change in this book. Simply put, the paraphrasing technique, which is all about getting the original meaning expressed in different ways, involves, among others, the process of replacing, reducing, deleting and/or augmenting part of the original, which will in turn get transformed into another versions.
It should be noted, however, that, for the sake of better comprehension while going through this book, the meaning of each rephrased part should be closely checked against that of its counterpart in the broad context of the original passages, the segments of which are repeated for transformation in 3 (Paraphrasing).
As for the sources of the original passages, they have been excerpted from a diverse assortment of the U.S. newspaper articles and columns (see Original Source of Passages at the back) in hopes of giving the learners of English some exposure to American culture as well as to myriads of useful expressions of frequent use in present-day English. The readers of this book, however, would be well advised to take into account the fact that the outdated information from some of those back issues has outlived its usefulness aside from the way it is provided.
And finally, this book on stylistic change, mainly dealing with the paraphrasing skill, an idea whose time has come, is especially designed to help advanced level learners of English gain confidence in writing on a broad range of subjects with a variety of stylistic devices at their disposal.
