한국 사상은 원천적으로 주술적 무속 신앙에서 출발하였지만, 이미 고대부터 외부에 문호를 활발하게 개방해왔다. 한국은 일찍이 동아시아 문화권에 편입되어 그 권역의 고급 종교를 흡수하였는데, 유교 · 불교 · 도교를 도입하여 수용한 사실이 바로 그것이다. 이를 통하여 한국 사상은 동아시아의 사상적 보편성을 공유하게 되었다. 따라서 이후 한국의 전통 사상은 무속 신앙의 풍토를 바탕으로 이룩한 유 · 불 · 도교 사상의 유기적 수용과 종합, 그리고 창발적 심화와 비판적 변용이라는 특성을 가지게 되었다.

유교 · 불교 · 도교를 고급 종교라고 하는 이유는, 비록 그것들에 주술적 신앙의 요소가 없지는 않지만 이성에 의해 뒷받침된 합리적 사유가 주조를 이루기 때문이다. 원래 도그마에 기초한 신앙과 신념은 종교의 범주를 벗어나지 못하지만, 이성에 의해 안출된 합리적 사유 방법과 내용은 철학에 속한다. 이런 의미에서 전통적인 한국 철학은 이 세 종교에 담긴 사상들을 한국인이 이성의 능력으로 종합하고 심화하고 변용한 부분이 아닐 수 없다.

이 책은 한국의 철학사상을 유형별로 나누어 총 5부로 구성하고, 각 부마다 다시 주제별 · 시대별로 나누어 집필되었다. 각 장은 집필자의 견해에 따라 절 · 목 등으로 편목을 구성하였으며, 해설문 · 원문 순으로 배열하였다.
