저자 조동일은 1939년 8월 9일생, 경북 영양군 출신, 1962년 서울대학교 불어불문학과를, 1966년 국어국문학과를 졸업했다. 1976년 국어국문학과에서 문학박사 학위를 받았다. 게명대학교, 영남대학교, 한국학대학원, 서울대학교 교수를 역임하고, 2004년 9월부터 계명대학교 석좌교수로 재직 중이며, 학술원 회원이다. 주요 저서로 '서사민요연구', '한국문학통사'(전6권), '우리 학문의 길', '인문학문의 사명', '소설의 사회사 비교론(전3권)' 등이 있다.
