우학 스님의 말씀은 일상의 언어로 쉽고, 재미있으며 그 내용도 알차서,

그 의미를 되새길수록 가슴에 와 닿으며, 마음공부에 큰 도움이 된다고 합니다.

외국인을 위해 펴낸 영문 역시 마찬가지입니다.

일상의 화두와 같은 말씀을 정리한 것입니다.

스님의 말씀은 종교적 관념이나 철학적 사유의 산물이 아닙니다. 진리를 구하는 스님으로서 일상의 삶에서 체득한 것들입니다. 스님 자신이 한글판 서문에서 밝히셨듯이 "논리적 연역을 통해 얻어 낸 것들이 아니기에 때로는 투박하고, 심지어는 거칠게조차 느껴지는 대목"들도 많습니다. 그러기에 오히려 가슴으로 쉽게 받아들이게 됩니다. 하루하루 말씀을 새기다 보면, 삶에 대해 "긍정적이고 건전한 생각을 가지게 되고" 이는 행복한 삶으로 연결됩니다.

이 책은 목차가 없습니다.

우학 저자 무일 우학 스님은 한국 최대의 전통 불교 종단인 조계종의 승려로 현재 한국불교대학 大관음사에서 회주(會主)의 소임을 맡고 있다. 그의 설법은 쉽고 재미있으면서도 불교의 핵심을 꿰뚫고 있는 것으로 유명해서 이미 20만 명이 넘는 이들이 그가 개설한 불교학습 과정을 이수했다. 또한 지역과 시간의 한계로 그의 설법을 듣지 못하는 수많은 이들은 인터넷을 통해 그의 가르침을 경청하고 있다. 불교 분야 베스트셀러의 저자이기도 한 그는 시와 소설 그리고 에세이와 교리 해설서를 비롯한 여러 장르에 걸친 끊임없는 글쓰기를 통해 일백여 권에 이르는 저서를 발표하여 불교의 대중화에 앞장서고 있다. 그는 한국 불교의 대표적 수행법인 간화선(看話禪)을 한 단계 발전시켰다는 평가를 받고 있는 선관쌍수(禪觀雙修)를 정립하여 한국과 중국 그리고 미국을 오가며 마음공부에 뜻을 두고 있는 모든 이들에게 즐겁고 행복하게 살아가는 참다운 지혜를 일깨워주고 있다.



Author Mu Il Woo Hak Sunim is a monk of the Jogye Order, the largest order of Korean Buddhism, and is currently serving as the abbot of Youngnam Buddhist School at Kwaneumsa Temple. His sermons are famous for being fun and easy to understand while getting straight to the point of Buddha's teachings, and more than 200,000 students have taken courses at the Buddhist School so far. For the many people who cannot hear his lectures because of location and time constraints, the sermons are made available online. Mu Il Woo Hak Sunim is also a bestselling author of Buddhist literature who has taken the lead in spreading Buddhism through over 100 publications covering the range of poetry, novels, essays and Buddhist commentaries. He is credited with establishing Seongwanssangsu(禪觀雙修), a method of chamseon (zen) meditation that is a evelopment of Ganhwaseon (看話禪, hwadu meditation), and travels between Korea, China and the United States to share words of wisdom that hold the key to happiness.
