김희민 1981년 미국에 유학하여 1983년 미네소타 대학교(University of Minnesota)에서 정치학 학사 학위를 받았다. 1990년에는 워싱턴대학교(Washington University in St.Louis)에서 정치학 박사학위를 받았다. 1989년에 플로리다 주립대학교(Florida State University)에 조교수로 임용이 되었고, 그곳에서 22년을 근무하였다. 2011년 귀국, 서울대학교 사회교육학과에서 정치교육을 가르쳤다. 플로리다 주립대학교에서는 명예교수직을 수여받으며 계속 연을 이어가고 있다. 2015년에는 중국 길림대학교에서 객좌교수로 임명을 받아 정기적으로 방문하여 강의를 하고 있다. 연구관심 분야는 합리적 선택이론, 민주주의 성취도 비교연구, 미래 가버넌스 연구 등이다. Rationality and Politics in the Korean Peninsula(1995), Mapping Policy Preferences: Estimates for Parties, Electors, and Governments, 1945-1998(2001), 매니페스토의 올바른 이해와 사용: 서구 24개국의 정당 매니페스토 연구(2007), Korean Democracy in Transition: A Rational Blueprint for Developing Societies(2011), 게임이론으로 푸는 한국의 민주주의(2013), 민주주의와 리더십 이야기(2016), 한국 보수정부의 부침 2008-2017(2019) 등의 저서를 출판하였고, 그 외에도 약 40편의 해외 학술지 논문이 있다. 북미한국정치연구회의 회장을 역임하였고, 학술활동을 통한 국위선양을 인정받아 김대중 대통령으로부터 대통령 훈포장을 받았다.
