머니 워즈 Money Words

영어에는 "돈이 세상을 돌아가게 한다(Money makes the world go round)" 라는 유명한 속담이 있다. 일자리부터 일상적인 쇼핑과 생활비까지, 또 정부 지출과 세금 및 세계 무역 정책에 관한 큼직한 뉴스까지, 우리가 무엇을 하더라도 돈은 결코 우리 머릿속에서 멀리 있지 않다. 따라서 돈의 언어를 이해해야, 돈 자체와 돈이 사용되는 방식을 이해하는 데도 도움이 된다. 이런 전제는 금융에 관련해 다양한 어휘를 지닌 영어에서도 다르지 않다.

많은 사람이 영어에서 돈과 관련한 용어는 간결하고 정확하며, 엄일하고 논리적이라 생각할지도 모르겠다. 많은 경우에 그렇기는 하다. 본질적으로 돈은 숫자와 관계가 있고, 사업과 언론과 학계처럼 격식을 갖춘 환경에서 주로 논의된다. 하지만 영어를 배울 때 흔히 그렇듯이, 액면 그대로 읽으면 논리적으로 이해되지 않는 특이한 용어가 많다. cash cow, filthy rich, cough-up 같은 용어를 생각해 보라.
한편 bulls와 bears가 돈과 관련된 용어로 쓰이는 경우는 17세기 무역, 즉 역사가 남긴 기괴한 유물이다. 현금을 뜻하는 많은 속어 moolah, wonga, dough 에서 입증되듯이, 지역 방언의 영향을 받은 단어들도 있다.
이처럼 별난 경우도 있지만, 다른 언어에서 그렇듯이 영어에서도 돈과 관련된 용어는 은유적으로 쓰인다. 예컨대 돈이 물처럼 흐르는 경우를 표현할 때는 liquid라는 용어를 사용하고, 돈이 자산 형태로 동결된 경우에는 freeze라는 표현이 사용된다. 자원은 '공동 관리' pool될 수 있고, 이례적인 가격 변동이 일어난 영역에는 bubble이 끼었다고 말한다. 많은 언어에서 그렇듯이, 영어에서도 돈이 피에 비유되고, 생명력 life-force, 즉 경제라는 '몸뚱이' body 의 건강과 활력을 유지하는 데 필요한 것으로 표현되는 건 일반적인 현상이다. 금융의 움직임은 전치사 up/down을 이용해 표현하는 뚜렷한 경향이 있고, 이런 경향
은 세계 어디에서나 흔히 볼 수 있지만, 때로는 forward/backward, outward/inward 등과 같은 용어가 사용되기도 한다.
