다른 나라의 말을 배운다는 것은, 사실 그 나라에 가서 직접 살아보지 않고는 몸으로 체득하는 데 오랜 시간이 걸립니다. 일상생활 곳곳에 자리 잡고 있는 '문화'를 단지 '공부'만 한다고 해서 알 수 있다는 것은 어불성설일지도 모르겠습니다. American Soap opera, Big Bang을 본다고 가정해 보죠. 시트콤인지라 배우들이 연기할 때 웃긴 장면이 나오면 방청석도 따라 웃습니다. 저는 왜 웃는지 이해를 못했는데 말이지요. 이디엄도 마찬가지 맥락입니다. 말 그대로 이해하다가는 남들 다 웃을 때, 그냥 따라 웃어야만 하는 바보 아닌 바보가 될 수밖에 없습니다. 이디엄은 사실 따로 시간을 내서 공부하지 않으면 알 수 없는 경우가 많습니다. 설령 단어의 뜻을 모두 안다 하더라도 문장 안에서 전혀 다른 의미로 사용되기 때문입니다. 예를 들어 "It's a piece of cake."라는 문장은 문자 그대로 해석했을 때 "그것은 케익 한 조각입니다."라고 해석되는데, 사실 아주 쉬운 일을 일컬을 때 사용하는 이디엄입니다. 이 이디엄을 처음 접하는 사람이 "이것은 식은 죽 먹기야."라고 이해하기란 거의 불가능할 것입니다. 이 책은 이디엄을 좀 더 쉽게, 친근하게 접근하게끔 하자는 의도로 기획되었습니다.

영어를 가르치는 교수법은 다양하다. 영어를 쉽게 배울 수 있다고 하는 여러 저자를 만나다 보면 각자 특색을 갖고 있다.
