Han SungJoo
1940년 서울 출생. 서울대 외교학과를 졸업하고 도미하여 미국 뉴햄프셔대에서 정치학 석사, 캘리포니아주립대(버클리)에서 정치학 박사학위를 받았다. 이후 미국 대학에서 약 8년, 귀국 이후 30년 가까이 고려대에서 연구하고 학생들을 가르쳤다. 김영삼 대통령 시절에는 외무부 장관으로 정책을 만들고 현장을 지휘했다. 노무현 대통령 시절에는 주미 대사로 격동의 외교무대에서 직접 선수로 뛰기도 했다. 대학에서 은퇴한 후에도 외교에 종사하고 있으니 반세기 경력의 '교수 외교관'이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
공직에 몸담고 있지 않은 시절에도 늘 민간외교 무대의 현장에 있었다. 교수 시절 다양한 국제 교류를 통해 쌓아둔 인맥은 훗날 장관으로서 공식 외교 무대에서 활동할 때 큰 도움이 되었다. 민간인 시절에는 키프로스 유엔사무총장 특별대표, 서울국제포럼 회장, 동아시아비전그룹(EAVG) 의장, 삼각위원회 아시아태평양지역 부의장을 역임했으며, 최근(2017년)까지 한독통일정책자문위원회 공동위원장, 한미협회 회장으로 활동했다.

Han SungJoo is a Professor Emeritus at Korea University. He previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus, a member of the UN Inquiry Commission on the 1994 Rwanda Genocide, Chairman of the East Asia Vision Group, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the United States, and Acting President of Korea University.
He is a graduate of Seoul National University and received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, he taught at City University of New York and was a visiting Professor at Columbia University and Stanford University. He was also a Distinguished Fellow at the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
He frequently played a consulting role for the Korean government, including several presidents, the ministry of foreign affairs, ministry of national defense, and ministry of national unification. He is also a chair professor at the National Diplomatic Academy of Korea.
His English publications include The Failure of Democracy in South Korea, Korean Diplomacy in an Era of Globalization, Korea in a Changing World, and Changing Values in Asia. He has many publications in Korean, including Nam Gwa Puk, kurigo Sekye (The Two Koreas and the World), and most recently a memoir in Korean, Oegyoui Gil (My Diplomatic Journey).
