본서는 품질경영을 실천하기 위한 통계 방법을 소개하는 데 목표를 두고 있다.
통계적 품질관리란 품질관리의 한 유형으로서 통계학과 모든 통계 수단을 사용하여 품질특성값을 관리하는 것을 의미한다.
1930년대부터 본격적으로 대두된 통계적 품질관리는 종합적 품질관리(TQC)와 TQM이 소개된 후에도 통계적 품질관리 기법에서 더욱 다양하게 발전하였다.
