이 책은 저자인 민경운(閔庚雲, Kyungwoon Min) 박사가 학술등재지인 『선교와 신학』에 기고한 논문들과 미국 UCLA 컨퍼런스에서 발표한 논문과 학술 세미나에서 발표한 논문 여섯 편을 묶어서 펴낸 책이다. 저자는 성덕교회를 담임하는 목사이면서 초기 한국장로교회의 제주(濟州)와 중국 산동(山東) 선교사 파송의 역사를 전공한 학자로서 초기 한국교회의 선교 역사를 깊이 있게 다루고 있다. 이 저서는 한국장로교회의 제주와 산동 선교 이외에 러시아와 만주(滿洲), 일본 선교를 다루고 있다. 특별히 제 4장(章)은 미국 UCLA 임 컨퍼런스(Im Conference)에서 발표한 ‘일제 강점기 시대에 러시아와 만주 선교’에 대한 논문을 다루고 있다. 총 6편의 논문은 저자가 영문으로 발표한 논문과 한글로 발표한 논문을 영문으로 번역한 논문들이다.

저자인 민경운(閔庚雲) 박사는 성균관대학교 한문교육학과를 졸업하고 약5년간 일선 중.고등학교에서 교사를 하였다. 그후 장로회신학대학원에서 목회학석사(M.Div.) 과정을 마치고 연세대학원 연합신학대학원에서 석사(Th.m.) 과정을 마치고 장신대와 미국 맥코믹신학대학원 공동 학위 과정을 졸업하고 목회학박사 학위(D.Min.)를 받았다. 이후 장신대 일반대학원에서 선교신학을 전공으로 신학박사(Th.D.) 학위를 받았다. 특별히 저자는 초기 한국교회의 선교역사가 전공이다. 그 이후 저자는 장신대에서 겸임교수와 초빙교수를 역임하고 현재는 미국 풀러신학대학원에서 객원교수로 목회학 박사과정의 학생들에게 '초기 한국교회의 선교사역과 현대 목회' 과목을 가르치고 있다. 또한 저자는 성덕교회를 담임하는 위임목사이기도 하다.
