이 책은 Hausa Folk-Lore (Maalam Shaihua, Sutherland Rattray 역, Clarendon Press, 1913) 과 Yoruba Legends (M. I. Ogumefu, London, The sheldon press, 1929)를 번역한 것이다. 이 두 권의 책에서 다루고 있는 하우사족과 요루바족은 오늘날 아프리카 국가들 중 최대의 인구를 가지고 있는 나이지리아의 거대 3대 민족 중 두 민족이다. 각각 5,600여만, 5,000여만 명의 인구를 가지고 있는 두 민족은 나이지리아의 또 다른 거대민족인 이보족(Ibo, Igbo)과 함께 나이지리아의 정치, 사회, 문화, 예술의 주역을 담당하고 있다.
단일 민족인 우리나라와는 달리 아프리카 대부분의 나라들은 적게는 수십에서, 많게는 수백 개의 민족 또는 부족들의 연합으로 구성되어 있다. 이들은 각자 자신들의 고유한 전통과 문화를 간직하고 있으며, 오늘날까지 국가에 운영에 있어서 민족 간의 이익 차이가 중요한 요인으로 작용하기도 한다. 그러므로 아프리카를 이해하는데 있어서 해당 국가의 민족에 대한 이해가 선행되어야 한다는 것은 당연한 일이다.
이 책에서 소개되는 이야기들은 19세기 말, 20세기 초에 그리오(griot)라는 암송시인들에 의해서 구전으로 전해지는 이야기들을 채록한 것이다. 이 이야기들에는 아프리카인들이 공유하고 있는 정신세계의 내용이 담겨있다. 구전 이야기들은 한 사회에 속해 있는 구성원들의 정신문화를 이해하는 가장 자연스럽고도 근원적인 수단이다. 왜냐하면 구전 설화는 세대 간 의사소통의 체계이자 세대를 건너뛰는 메시지이기 때문이다. 세대를 건너서 전달되는 이야기들에는 그 사회 구성원들의 가치관과 문화가 반영되어 있으며, 세대 공통의 정신적 유산이 담겨 있다. 흔히 과장과 비논리적 전개로 이루어져 있는 구전 이야기들은 단순한 이야기가 아니라, 인간 세상의 욕망과 법칙들이 담겨 있는 거대한 레퍼런스이다. 흔히 초인적 세계를 그리는 것으로 시작되는 이 이야기들은 결말에 가서는 대개 인간 세계의 현실적 가치나 기능을 담고 있기 때문이다.
