Though Flowers Fall I Have Never Forgotten You(꽃이 져도 나는 너를 잊은 적 없다)

마음을 울리고, 눈을 밝히며, 생각의 깊이를 더하는 시
인간 본연의 외로움, 슬픔, 기다림, 사랑, 고통을 노래하는 정호승의 시는 10대부터 60-70대까지 폭넓은 지지를 받아 왔으며, 노래로 만들어진 시만 60여 편에 이른다.
그렇다고 정 시인의 시가 쉽고 대중적인 것만은 아니다. 번역가의 말을 빌리자면 '기쁨과 슬픔이 불가분하게 얽힌 인간 존재의 역설을 향한' 그의 탐구는 '때로는 난해하지만 마음을 울리고, 눈을 밝히며, 생각의 깊이를 더한다.' 탐구의 여정에 동참한 많은 독자들은 그 안에서 엄혹한 현실에도 부서지지 않은 위안과 희망을 발견했다.


시는 읽는 이의 것
두 번역가의 노력과 한국문학번역원의 지원에 힘입어, 정호승의 시는 이제 전 세계 독자들과 만나게 되었다. 청년기부터 노년기까지, 정 시인의 40여 년 시 세계가 고스란히 담긴 220편의 시가 두 권의 시집에 나뉘어 실리는데, [Though Flowers Fall I Have Never Forgotten You]가 그 두 번째 책이고, 첫 번째 책이 함께 출간된 [A Letter Not Sent]이다.
정호승은 시가 시인이 아닌 독자의 것이라고 믿는다. 자신은 다른 사람이 써야 할 시를 대신해서 쓴 것이며, 따라서 이 시집을 읽는 독자는 스스로가 쓴 시를 읽는 것이라고 한다. 외국 독자들의 시선을 통해 그의 시가 또 어떻게 새롭게 쓰여지고 읽힐지 기대된다.

Farewell, my dear, may you walk alone down the dawn paths of this age, encounter the freedom

of love and death, into the icy river winds, without even a tomb, into the fierce blizzards,

정호승 Jeong Ho-seung

1950년 경남 하동에서 태어나 대구에서 성장했으며, 경희대 국문과와 동 대학원을 졸업했다. 1972년 한국일보 신춘문예에 동시, 1973년 대한일보 신춘문예에 시, 1982년 조선일보 신춘문예에 단편소설이 당선돼 작품활동을 시작했으며 '반시反詩' 동인으로 활동했다. 시집 《슬픔이 기쁨에게》 《서울의 예수》 《별들은 따뜻하다》 《새벽편지》 《사랑하다가 죽어버려라》 《외로우니까 사람이다》 《눈물이 나면 기차를 타라》 《이 짧은 시간 동안》 《포옹》 《밥값》 《여행》 《나는 희망을 거절한다》 《당신을 찾아서》 《슬픔이 택배로 왔다》와 시선집 《흔들리지 않는 갈대》 《수선화에게》 《내가 사랑하는 사람》, 동시집 《참새》를 냈다. 이 시집들은 영한시집 《A Letter Not Sent(부치지 않은 편지)》 《Though flowers fall I have never forgotten you(꽃이 져도 나는 너를 잊은 적 없다)》 외 일본어, 스페인어, 러시아어, 조지아어, 몽골어, 중국어 등으로 번역되었다. 산문집 《내 인생에 힘이 되어준 한마디》 《내 인생에 용기가 되어준 한마디》 《외로워도 외롭지 않다》 《고통 없는 사랑은 없다》와 우화소설 《산산조각》이 있다. 소월시문학상, 정지용문학상, 편운문학상, 가톨릭문학상, 상화시인상, 공초문학상, 김우종문학상, 석정시문학상 등을 수상했다. 대구에 정호승문학관이 있다.

Born in 1950 in Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do, Jeong Ho-seung was raised in the city of Daegu and received his bachelor's and master's degree from the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Kyunghee University in Seoul. He won the poetry prizes in the 1972 Hankook Ilbo New Spring Literary Contest and the 1973 Daehan Daily New Spring Literary Contest, and the short-story prize in the 1982 Chosun Ilbo New Spring Literary Contest, and was active in the "Anti-Poetry" literary group. His poetry collections include From Sorrow to Joy, Seoul's Jesus, Dawn Letter, Stars Are Warm, Love Then Die, To Be Lonely Is to Be Human, Take a Train When the Tears Fall, In This Short While, An Embrace, Earning My Keep, Travels, I Refuse Hope, and In Search of You. He also released the poetry anthologies An Unshakable Reed, The People I Love, and To Daffodils; Korean-English bilingual poetry collections A Letter Not Sent and Though Flowers Fall I Have Never Forgotten You; and the essay collections Words That Have Given Me Strength, Words That Have Given Me Courage, and Without You, There is No Me, among others. The storybooks for adults Loving and Lonesome Jar: Poetic Fables have been translated into English, German, Chinese, and Vietnamese; and his poetry collections have been translated into Japanese, Spanish, Russian, Georgian, and Mongolian. Jeong's accolades include the So-Wol Literary Prize, the Jeong Ji-young Literary Prize, the Pyeonun Literary Prize, the Catholic Literary Award, the Sanghwa Poetry Award, and the Gongcho Literary Prize.
