필자가 불법(佛法)을 처음 만난 것이 29세 때 였으니, 벌써 36년의 시간이 흘렀다.
옛 성현이 말씀하시기를, “사람으로 태어나기 어렵고, 불법(佛法) 만나기 어렵고, 선지식(善知識) 만나기는 더욱 어렵다.”고 했는데, 부처님의 법(法)과 가피 속에서 살고 있는 필자는 이 얼마나 다행한 일인가.
인간은 생로병사(生老病死)를 피할 수 없는 유한한 존재이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 온갖 탐욕(貪)과 성냄(瞋)과 어리석음(癡)의 무명(無明) 속에서 끊임없이 고통(苦)의 삶을 살아가며, 윤회(輪?하고 있는 것이다.
다행스럽게도, 2600여년 전에 부처님께서 일대사인연(一大事因緣)으로 이 땅에 오셨다. 6년 간의 치열한 구도 끝에 위 없는 깨달음(無上正覺)을 이루신 후, 45년 동안 지혜(智慧)와 자비(慈悲)의 법(法)을 전하시고, 교화(敎化)하셨다.
또한, 6세기 경에는, 시절인연이 도래하여 달마(達磨)대사가 중국에 선(禪)을 전하였으니, 이는 부처님의 말씀을 가장 간명직료하게 전하는 수행방법이라고 할 수 있다. 이에 오직 마음(心印)만을 이심전심(以心傳心)으로 역대 조사(祖師)들게 전했다.
즉, 육조혜능(六祖慧能) 대사는 사람마다 본래 갖추고 있는 자성(自性)을 깨닫는 견성(見性)을 중시하였다. 또한, 마조(馬祖) 대사는 ‘이 마음이 곧 부처이다(卽心是佛)’와 함께 ‘평상심이 도(道)다(平常心是道)’라고 주장하였다

넷째, (제4장) '선시(禪詩)?게송(偈頌)'에서는 '옛 조사스님들의 깨달음의 노래'라는 부제목 하에, 32편의 선시와 게송을 실었다. 옛 조사스님들의 깨달음의 경지를 직접 음미해 보시길 바란다.
