박정기 전 한국전력 사장의 신작 에세이 『WAKE UP, KOREA!』가 ‘詩와에세이’에서 영문으로 재 출간되었다.
30여 년 전 저자는 손녀들이 태어나자, 아이들이 자라면서 겪게 될 효도와 우애, 학문과 사랑, 그리고 사회생활에 대해 자상하게 일러주는 형식의 『어느 할아버지의 평범한 이야기』(을지서적 간)를 펴내 독자들에게 잔잔한 감동을 선사한 바 있다. 이번 신작 에세이 『WAKE UP, KOREA!』는 증손자를 본 계기의 후속작이라 할 수 있다.
첫 번째 에세이 『어느 할아버지의 평범한 이야기』는 주로 개인이 갖춰야 할 소양이나 윤리, 도덕, 가치관 등에 초점을 두었다면 이번 신작 에세이 『WAKE UP, KOREA!』는 선진국 문턱에 와있는 이 땅의 젊은이들에게 꿈과 비전을 제시하고 있다.
동북공정은 쉽게 말해 역사 왜곡이다. 고구려 역사를 중국의 역사로 만들려는 공작이다. 중국의 주장은 이렇다. ‘고구려 민족은 중국의 소수민족이었다. 고구려는 중국 영토 내에서 건국되어 그 범위가 한사군(한나라가 만든 4개 행정구역)을 벗어나지 못했다. 고구려가 망한 후 고구려 민족은 한족에 흡수되었다. 따라서 고구려는 중국의 지방 나라였다.’

우리의 현실과 문제점은 무엇이며, 미국ㆍ중국ㆍ일본의 근세사를 통해 우리 주요 주변국의 성격이 어떤지 구체적으로 살펴보고 있다. 그리고 격변하는 국제정세와 4차 산업혁명의 파고를 헤쳐 나가야 할 방향성과 우리의 마음가짐에 대해서 역사적 사실과 저자의 경험 등을 현실감 있게 재구성하고 있다.
청춘의 특권은 무엇인가? 꿈과 포부와 야망이 아니던가! 꿈은 가꾸고 줄기차게 추구하면 반드시 이루어진다. 꿈이 커도 괜찮은가? 물론이다. 꿈은 클수록 좋다. 심하게 말해 터무니없는 꿈이라도 좋다. 문제는 정성이다. 하늘이 감동하는 정성을 다하면 반드시 이룰 수 있다.
발은 땅을 밟고 있되 우리의 시선은 항상 저 멀고 높은 곳이다. 그래야 발전한다. 현실에 머물지 말라. 앞으로, 앞으로, 벽을 넘어, 더 높은 곳을 향해 전진하자.

이 책은 저자 개인의 삶의 과정이나 평소의 입장 등을 미루어 볼 때 한 보수주의자의 의견이나 주장 정도로 치부될 수도 있을 것이다. 그러나 저자가 권두언에서 “어휘선택이 좀 거칠고 서술이 상스럽다. 체면, 위신, 가식을 버리고 싶었다. 진정, 당신과 나 사이, 우리만의 진솔한 얘기를 나누고 싶어서였다.”라고 밝혔듯이, 어쩌면 이 책은 보수와 진보라는 이분법적인 사고를 떠나, 지금의 이 나라를 이끌어온 세대가 미래를 이끌어갈 다음 세대에게 진심으로 전해주고 싶은 헌사(獻辭)다.

Jung-ki "Rocky" Park
A graduate of Korea Military Academy in 1958, Park pursued a career as a soldier, business executive, sports administrator, and author. After retirement from the army in 1973, he served as the CEO of Korea Heavy Industries and the CEO of the state-owned Korea Electrical Power Corporation (KEPCO). During his tenure at KEPCO, Park superintended the rapid growth of Korea's nuclear power generation technology, earning him praise until he retired from the company in 1987.
In 1985, Park became the President of the Korea Association of Athle- tics Federations and oversaw two achievements that Korean athletics had thought impossible: winning two Olympic medals-gold and silver-in the men's marathon. Park also served as one of the longest-running council members of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) from 1991 to 2015. He played a crucial role in hosting the World Championships in Daegu, Korea, in 2011.
Park has also seen success as a bestselling author of books, including Plain Stories by a Grandpa, which sold over 300,000 copies. He has published more than ten books spanning various topics, from sports to politics. He currently serves as the President of the Korea Corporate Members of the AUSA (Association of the United States Army) and Chairman of the Korea Athletics Foundation.
