이 책은 우선 저자의 십수 년 간의 연구 업적을 바탕으로 한자가 우리 조상이 만든 우리 문자라는 사실을 상당한 편폭으로 증명해 보인다. 아울러 인격도야라는 일석이조의 효과를 위해 삶의 지혜가 농축된 중국 고대 명언 명구 90개를 골라 이야기를 곁들이고 관련 한자를 익힐 수 있도록 꾸며져 있다. 대학생 중에 초등학교에서 배우는 ‘만유인력(萬有引力)의 법칙’, ‘항성(恒星)’과 ‘행성(行星)’의 차이를 정확히 아는 학생이 열에 한 둘인 실정이다. 우리말에서 한자가 중요하다는 것을 인정하면서도 외면하는 이유는 무엇인가? 바로 한자가 중국 문자라는 한자 컴플렉스 때문이다.
