이 책은 우리나라 특산식물인 인삼이 어떻게 산업으로 성장하였는지를 역사적으로 조명하였다. 해외에 널리 알려진 고려인삼의 실체와 유래를 문헌을 통해 학문적으로 고증하였다. 지난 3년간인 2018년, 2019년에 저술한 ?한국인삼산업사? 1, 2를 기반으로 하여 최신내용까지 보충하여 영문으로 저술하였다. 이 책이 나옴으로 하여 지금까지 피상적으로 알고 있거나 일본과 중국의 특산물로 오해하고 있던 외국인에게 학문적으로 인삼의 본고장이 한국이며, 세계 최초로 인공적으로 인삼재배를 성공시켰고 인삼을 장기간 보존할 수 있는 홍삼을 발명한 업적도 모두 조선의 삼업인이 이루었다. 이 두 가지 발명으로 인삼을 원료로 사용하여 산업화를 이룰 수 있었다. 이 책에서는 4,000만 년 전 인삼의 원조 식물 화석의 발견에서부터, 한민족의 조상이 만주와 한반도에서 최초로 인삼을 식용한 민족이며, 이를 무역의 제1품목으로 삼아 고조선, 삼국시대를 거쳐서 조선왕조, 일제강점기, 미군정시기, 건국 후 전매청 시절까지 일어난 인삼의 역사와 산업화 과정을 다루고 전통의 재배법을 계승한 인삼공사의 인삼재배법과 홍삼제조법에 대해 설명한다. 민간기업인 태평양화학공업 (아모레퍼시픽의 전신)이 인삼을 원료로 사용한 인삼 화장품 “설화수”와 일양약품이 개발한 인삼 드링크 “원비”는 글로벌 시장에서 호평을 받아 오는 성공사례에 속한다.
이 책은 외국인들이 가지고 있던 고려인삼에 대한 잘못된 편견을 일소하는 계기를 만들었다는 점에서 높이 평가되어야 할 것이다.

Il-Moo CHANG, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus in the Natural Products Research Institute and the College of Pharmacy at Seoul National University. He earned Ph.D. of Biophysical Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at University of Houston. Prof. Chang is a recognized authority in the field of traditional oriental drugs including ginseng. Prof. Chang has served as an advisory panel member of the Traditional and Complementary Medicine in W.H.O. at Geneva for many years. He is an advisory member of the American Botanical Council. Prof. Chang has exerted his expertise for ginseng industry, and was director of the Korean Ginseng Research Institute, and C.T.O. of the Korean Ginseng Corporation.
Prof. Chang is the author of over a dozen books in the field. Nine volumes of "Treatise on Asian Herbal Medicines" and its database version, "TradiMed Database" (www.tradimed.com) have provided an accessible information on traditional oriental medicines including traditional Korean, Chinese and Japanese medicines.
