마침내 우리 시조에 대해 세계가 눈을 뜨기 시작하였다. 이에 발 맞추어 우리의 모국어에 갇혀있던 시조가 날개를 펴고 나라 밖으 로 널리 날고 있다. 시조는 다만 한국의 전통시에 그치는 것이 아 니고 나랏말씀과 겨레의 글자인 한글과 함께 곧 한국의 정체성이 요 한국문화의 정수이다.

이서연 시인은 올해로 등단 30년을 넘어서 시조 창작의 절정에 다다른 정예 규수 시인이다. 이미 여러 권의 사화집과 평론 활동으 로 오늘의 한국 시단과 시조 시단의 중심에서 남다른 창작의 열정 과 혼불을 들어 올리고 있거니와 여기 영역시조집 《내 안의 그》가 내뿜는 날 선 감성과 사유의 천착穿鑿이 쌓은 경지가 높고 깊다.
시조는 3장, 6구, 12마디로 45자 내외인데, 종장 첫 마디 세 글 자 수는 반드시 지켜야 하고 종장 두 번째 마디는 다섯 글자에서 일곱 글자까지 쓸 수가 있다. 기타 나머지 마디에는 한 글자를 가 감하여 시적 효과를 극대화한다. 영문 번역의 경우 인쇄의 편의상 약간 들여쓰기를 하여 6행의 모습을 가진다. 요즘 자유시에서도 극 시極詩라는 이름으로 짧은 시로 돌아오는 경향이 있는데 시조에서도 연작시를 벗어나 시조의 원형原形인 단수 쓰기에 많은 시인 동참하는 것은 매우 반가운 일이다.
이 시집도 단수로만 엮고 있는데 어쩌면 약 2천 년 전 신라시대 부터 이어져 내려왔다는 시조의 원류인 "향가"의 물줄기가 마르지 않고 복류천으로 흐르다가 이서연 시인의 머리맡에 닿아 이를 이 시대의 시조로 받아 적은 듯하다. 그 까닭은 향가 시인이었던 월명 대사가 1천3백 년 전 지었다는 도솔가兜率歌가 보여준 불가적佛家的 염원과 사랑의 구현具顯이 너무도 생생하게 재현되고 있기 때문이 다. 그럼 다음의 이서연의 시조를 보기로 하자.
오래된 나무처럼 나이테를 두르면서
소리 없는 그림자로 한 가슴 자리하고
서로가 한 몸 되는 순간 꽃잎처럼 피는 시

표제시인 〈내 안의 그〉는 이보다 더 혼연일체가 될 수 없는 사랑 의 완성이다. 사람과 사람 사이에서는 만날 수 없는 어떤 우주적 섭리로 절정에 이르는 그 황홀경, 그것을 두고 "서로가 한 몸 되는 순간 꽃잎처럼 피는 시"라고 했다. 누가 얼마만큼의 절차탁마로 한 몸이 되는 시를 얻을 수 있을까? 아마도 불가에서의 윤회에서나 만 나지는 것이 아닐까.
《애지욕기생》에 이르면 고려, 조선조의 선승들이 면벽좌선面壁坐禪으로 뽑아내던 선시禪詩, 또는 게송偈頌을 떠오르게 한다. 한 특정 한 대상에 대한 연가戀歌가 아니라 어떤 절대자에 대한 구애求愛이 다. 이것은 이서연 시인이 오래 마음속에 닦아온 화두를 시조를 빌 어서 터트리고 있음이라고 보인다.
이서연 시인이 분명하게 정체성을 갖고 꾸준히 자기 세계를 이 루어나가는 자세가 참으로 아름답다. 이 영역시집이 바다 밖에서 널리 읽히어 시조에 대한 새로운 이해와 함께 이서연 시인의 이름 도 함께 빛나기를 빈다.
Sijo Poetry in Bloom for a Cosmic Reason

Lee Seo-yeon started her literary career 30 or so years ago, and she has reached the climax of writing sijo as an elite poetess. She has already published some literary books and she also works as a literary critic. As one of core members of Korean poetry society and Korean sijo society, she has also directed much of her passion and spirit toward creative writing. This sijo collection, The Man Inside me, shows her high level of sense and sensibility.
Sijo consists of 3 lines, 6 phrases and 12 segments with about 45 syllables. To maximize poetic efficiency, sijo writers can add or subtract one syllable at each segment, except for the first segment (absolutely three syllables) of the final line and the second segment (5~7 syllables) of the final line. However, for printing, each English line is divided into two lines by making an indentation.
This collection consists of 108 sijo poems. It seems that one of these poems resembles Hyangga which is the origin of sijo. People say Hyangga was passed down from the Silla Dynasty about 2000 years ago. I think that the Hyangga didn't stop but continued to flow in a stream, and finally it reached Lee Seo- yeon. So she took it and then produced a recent sijo. The reason why I think so is that her following sijo 'The Man Inside Me' is similar to 'Dosolga' written by Wolmyeong, who was a Buddhist monk and Hyangga poet in the Silla Dynasty. He wrote the poem about 1300 years ago. His poem contains Buddhistic wish and love so vividly. Now let's see Lee Seo-yeon's following sijo.
Exactly like an old tree,
the man holds annual rings.
He has a place in my heart
as a shadow, keeping silent.
The moment he and I are one,
a poem comes out like petals.

It is her title sijo, 'The Man Inside Me', and it shows her completion of love with the feeling of being one with her surroundings. There is cosmic providence that cannot be easily taken between people. The providence leads people to a state of ecstasy. She described it as "The moment he and I are one, a poem comes out like petals". How much should we polish our writing style to be one body? Perhaps through the cycle of reincarnation in Buddhism?
When I read her sijo 'Love Keeps People Alive', it reminds me of Zen sijo or Buddhist hymns written by Buddhist monks of the Koryeo Dynasty and the Joseon Dynasty. The monks wrote poems through Zen meditation of their facing the wall. Therefore, their poems were not love songs toward a person. Rather, they tried to win the love of the Supreme Being. Lee Seo-yeon kept it long in her mind and wrote the above sijo poem.
It's good for her to continue building her own world with a clear identity. I'd like Lee Seo-yeon and her sijo collection to be well-known overseas with a new understanding of sijo poems.

Making a Pilgrimage to Find Her True Self

Poems can take us on journeys to different places, back in historical time, personal memories, or to meet other poems. The sijo form seems especially well suited to re-presenting travels, pilgrimages, away into the Korean landscape to visit sites, to pause for reflection, and perhaps offer some sort of gesture to in-scribe the personal and individual within one's memory of the place. These traces would fill the first two lines of a sijo poem, with the Introduction of the place in the first line, and the development of one's sense of it, or record of the journey there, in the second. The third line of the sijo form always starts in its very first phrase with a turn, a twist as it's often described. This might be a memory prompted by the place, or an unanticipated feature of the place itself. Then the poem and the pilgrim journey will conclude.
Lee Seo-yeon's marvelous new collection of 108 sijo poems gives us several such journeys: out and away, a sudden moment, and then the return, in or with a different outlook, an altered state of mind, just like in the following poems.
It will be winter soon:
the wind-bells sound somewhat cold.
My heart will leave the place soon,
Only cold lights are seen to me.
When I leave, not hurting people's feelings,
I open the sanctum door.

Following the last winter,
I came here to see sunset.
But the bay is filled with winds
that resemble the fading sun.
Reflecting on some poetic words,
I end the day that's incomplete.

But more than written memories of places or moments, so many of the poems in this collection seem to be their own, right-there moments of contemplation, reflection, and rather than remembering, of awakening. The poems, many of them, work like koan, the Buddhist practice of seeking to grasp the meaning of this, right here. What does this mean, and how may it lead to an awakening, a realization of the meaning of life? That is the quiet, powerful promise of so many of the poems in this remarkable gathering, such as this: I don't know where I should go
when I stand before a road sign.
I don't know what I should see,
when I read the signboard.
I seek love, but I don't know yet
where to go and what to do.

Spiritual, religious practices can bring encouragement and support in difficult, challenging times. Through their representation-indeed, enactment-of such practices, Lee Seoyeon's poems offer moments of insight, of buoyant relief from the tides and currents that pull at us in the world. I would imagine that English-language readers having an interest in Buddhist practice will find her poems especially engaging, but that all of us will find, in these poems, moments and places where we step away, to turn and look back at the world in a new way. I hope her sijo poems will draw readers around the world as well as in her own country.

This might be a memory prompted by the place, or an unanticipated feature of the place itself. Then the poem and the pilgrim journey will conclude.
Lee Seo-yeon's marvelous new collection of 108 sijo poems gives us several such journeys: out and away, a sudden moment, and then the return, in or with a different outlook, an altered state of mind, just like in the following poems.
It will be winter soon:
the wind-bells sound somewhat cold.
My heart will leave the place soon,
Only cold lights are seen to me.
When I leave, not hurting people's feelings,
I open the sanctum door.

Following the last winter,
I came here to see sunset.
But the bay is filled with winds
that resemble the fading sun.
Reflecting on some poetic words,
I end the day that's incomplete.

But more than written memories of places or moments, so many of the poems in this collection seem to be their own, right-there moments of contemplation, reflection, and rather than remembering, of awakening. The poems, many of them, work like koan, the Buddhist practice of seeking to grasp the meaning of this, right here. What does this mean, and how may it lead to an awakening, a realization of the meaning of life? That is the quiet, powerful promise of so many of the poems in this remarkable gathering, such as this: I don't know where I should go
when I stand before a road sign.
I don't know what I should see,
when I read the signboard.
I seek love, but I don't know yet
where to go and what to do.

Spiritual, religious practices can bring encouragement and support in difficult, challenging times. Through their representation-indeed, enactment-of such practices, Lee Seoyeon's poems offer moments of insight, of buoyant relief from the tides and currents that pull at us in the world. I would imagine that English-language readers having an interest in Buddhist practice will find her poems especially engaging, but that all of us will find, in these poems, moments and places where we step away, to turn and look back at the world in a new way. I hope her sijo poems will draw readers around the world as well as in her own country.
