서진숙 시인은 2016년 《시조생 활》지 '봄호'에 신인문학상을 수상하면서 시조시단에 올랐다. 당선작 「동백꽃」은 물론 함께 발표된 「노을」과 「비바람」이 모 두 범상치 않은 기량이 돋보이는 작품들이었다.
그의 당선 소감 또한 주목을 받았다. '장미꽃의 향기로 세상 을 놀라게 하겠다는 야망'이 아닌, '은근한 모습으로 온기를 담 아내는 시조'를, '많은 풀꽃들이 모여 조금씩 영토를 넓혀 가듯' 겸허한 자세로 써 나가겠노라고 했다. Lyricism and Metaphor
Heartwarming news has arrived across the Pacific Ocean. It's good news that the sijo poetess Seo Chin-suk publishes her first collection of sijo poetry. She made her debut as a sijo poet in 2016 through the spring issue of the Sijo Life, by winning the literary award given to new writers. Her prize-winning sijo poem 'Camellia Flower' and her two poems 'Sunset' and 'Rain and Wind' were remarkably good.
When she received the award, her words came to the fore. Instead of surprising the world with the scent of roses, she promised to modestly write warm sijo poems with a courteous demeanor, as if lots of grass flowers should get together to expand their land bit by bit. She said that she would join the work of following and informing the sijo principle of 'the harmony of moderation and balance', that is to say, the absolute esthetics of sijo poetry. I am sure, she is a sijo poet who has already acquired the exquisite principle of sijo esthetics. She has never rashly published and shown her poems to the literary judges and readers.

아래의 작품은 제목이 100년 전쯤 발표된 한국의 전설적 서 정시인 김소월의 「진달래」를 생각나게 해서 두 배나 마음이 갔던 시조입니다. 그러나 서진숙 시인의 시조는 김소월 시인과 달 리, 이별의 길이 아닌 초대를 노래하고 있으며 새처럼 높이 날 아올라 우리 앞에 펼쳐진 봄의 모습을 다음과 같이 예찬하고 있습니다.

Poetry Is the Bridge
The Sijo Poets division of the Korean Writers Association has dedicated itself to the wider and deeper understanding and enjoyment of the sijo form worldwide. They have published twelve collections of sijo poems translated by Woo Hyeong-sook. The wonderful variety of poems in these collections will take readers out into the Korean landscape on journeys and moments much like the marvelous landscape paintings that have come down to us from the Choseon period. They also take us into the bustling urban areas of present-day Korea.
A reader might think there could be nothing new or startling in a book of sijo poems from the Association, yet these poems by Seo Chin-suk let us find ourselves in an entirely different landscape, out on the west coast of the United States. Readers, be prepared for a contemplative flight up into the heights of the Golden Gate Bridge, or out across the waves at the Berkeley Marina, the last in a wonderful outreach of prayer to a Japanese person.
This reader double-loved the poem "Azaleas," as its title brought to mind the poem "Azaleas" by the legendary Korean folksong poet Kim Soweol, published almost a century ago. But in Seo's sijo poem the landscape presents, in place of paths of separation, an invitation instead to fly up and into the joy of the spring celebration laid out before us:
I to greet the spring with a big feast,
every hill has red awnings.
The sweet scent, wafting to me,
may be a card to invite me.
Once again my mind wanders in spring;
I'm a bluebird flying up.
