메이플라워호 항해 200주년이 되는 해인 2020년에 존 코피 교수가 진행한 짧은 강연을 책으로 옮겼다. 코피 교수는 청교도들이 신세계에 당도한 사건 자체보다는 그 원인을 간략히 짚어 준다. 즉 지속적인 개혁을 요구하던 청교도들에게조차 잉글랜드 국교를 벗어나는 것이 매우 이례적이었던 시기에 이들이 온갖 불이익을 감수하고 국교를 떠나도록 만든 역사/이론적 원인을 소개한다.
